Week 8: Being sober
Sober defined: Not mad or insane; not wild, visionary or heated with passion; having the regular exercise of cool dispassionate reason.
Sober defined: Temperate in the use of spiritous liquors; habitually temperate; as a sober man.
1st definition of sober (Ready mind)
Why are we to be sober? 1st Peter 5:8 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:"
Because of the goal and intent of our adversaries,
Who are our adversaries?
1. The devil- Job 1-2, Luke 4:2.
2. ungodly people- Jude 1:4, Luke 10:25.
3. false teachers- Colossians 2:8, Matthew 7:15.
What are we to watch out for? And why?
The adversary, 1st Peter 5:8, to avoid him. Notice, James 4:7 we don't have to fight the devil as in a war, simply resist him and he will flee, God will do the fighting for us.
Our flesh, James 1:14, Romans 7:18-25, to avoid sin.
Christ's return, 2nd Peter 3:10-14, to live for God.
2nd definition of sober (Not drunken)
What counts? Substances that alter your ability to think clearly.
Why so serious?
$50,000,000,000.00 is spent each year on booze, but 64 Billion is lost in lost man hours, accidents, etc
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is the leading cause of mental retardation.
Alcohol is the leading cause of death for the 15-24 year old age group
Alcohol is a factor in
83% of all deaths by fire
68% of all drownings
80% of all suicides
40% of all industrial accidents
86% of all murders
65% of all child abuse
Do you really believe God is ok with His children putting that in their lives?
Dumb arguments:
God made weed so it's ok to get high. Genesis 3 (weeds came after sin)
Jesus turned water to wine so it's ok to drink. 1. He didn't drink it 2. He never condoned it 3. God always warned against it. Proverbs 20:1,23:29-33.
What about 1st Timothy 5:23? Well read the ingredients on a bottle of NyQuil.
It's ok to drink, just don't get drunk. Apply that to other sins? Proverbs 31:4-5,Revelations 1:6
The benefits of living soberly.
A strong defense, a good relationship with God, the ability to make wise choices, etc, etc
