S.S.S. Study The Conduct of the Church
Family School at Faith Baptist Church
Week 1
Led by the Spirit
Take notice: In this lesson we are learning about the Spirit, not spirits (notice the capitalization) there are many spirits in this world who are not God, and would do us spiritual harm. Luke 4:23, 1st John 4:1
Why should the church/Christian be led by the Spirit?
He is our guide.
Guide for truth, John16:13, John 14:16,26, 15:26.
It is our duty.
Ephesians 4:1, 2nd Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 5:16, Jesus sets the example Matthew 4:1
When should the church/Christian be led by the Spirit?
It is most times easy to allow the Spirit to lead us into truth in our study of Gods word, but when the Spirit starts leading us to change our friends, our plans, and our desires, or even when the Spirit leads us out of our comfort zone, it can get hard for the half in Christian.
Example: Jonah only desired to preach to those he chose and ran away from the Spirits call.
Peter was led by the Spirit to an Ethiopian man in a chariot and he ran to the Spirits call.
Jonah after hard struggle and disaster finally obeyed God, Peter with a willing heart immediately obeyed God, in both cases those who God sent His men to were saved. But the paths to Gods will differed greatly.
Note: the Spirit of God will never ever lead you to do anything contrary to His Word! This is the great error and heresy of the modern church movement in America, Jesus told me it was ok to drink, God led me to preach that homosexuality isn't bad, I FELT God say I'm no longer a sinner, God wants me to love me more, etc, etc, etc.
How can the church/Christian be led by the Spirit?
Yield yourself to His righteousness.
Not ours, our friends, our pastors, etc. Isaiah 64:6. He is the point by which we can define righteousness, 1st John 2:1, Psalm 7:9, five times in Psalm 119 God is said to have righteous judgments. Psalm 119:7,62,106,160,164. See also Romans 6:13-19.
Yield yourself to His will.
Romans 8:13-14, 1st Corinthians 15:31, Mark 10:21.
Obey His call.
Acts 16:5-10, 1st John 2:6, Mark 16:15.
What benefits are there for the church/Christian who is led by the Spirit?
Gods Peace.
Romans 8:16, John 14:27, Philippians 4:7, this verse is so often misused, here's a secret.... It does not apply to all Christians..... whenever the word "and" is the first word of the verse, that means the verse does not stand alone, "and" is a conjunction that joins two things together. Read verses 4-6 then verse 7, if we live for God being led by God then verse 7 applies.
Gods presence.
1st John 1:7, when Daniel was in the lions den, God was with him, when Joseph was in prison, God was with him, When those who walk with God are in the valley, God is there!
Proverbs 15:29 tells us that God is far from the wicked, but Praise God if you are saved, if you allow the Spirit of God to lead you.....
Psalm 23:1 "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever."
What happens when the church/Christian does not allow the Spirit to lead?
The Spirit is replaced with other things or other spirits, which causes spiritual wandering.
1st John 4:1, 1st Timothy 5:12-15
The church/Christian slowly fades into a spiritual coma.
Jeremiah 2:8
Nothing gets done for God.
Titus 3:9, Romans 3:10-12, Matthew 24:14-30.
Memory Verses: Galatians 5:16-17 "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would."
Homework:
Nine times in Psalms the writer asks God "lead me" list those verses, and why the writer chooses God as his guide, also explain some ways how you can know when Gods Spirit is leading you.
